"You should read books like you take medicine, by advice, and not by advertisement." ~ John Ruskin
Dennis Prager has written some excellent commentaries on the books of the Torah (the first five books of the Bible) entitled, The Rational Bible. His book about Deuteronomy and his book on Exodus are particularly impressive. But in both book he makes the same mistake, he confuses the word approval with the word love. (See Ch 19, section “Is God’s Love Unconditional?)
The Bible says a father punishes the son he loves. Is he punishing his son because he approves of his behaviour? Of course not. He’s punishing his son because he loves him.
God loves all people equally. His punishment against the very wicked will be severe, but only because his love is so fierce.* Having said this, I highly recommend Prager's books. See the reviews on Amazon. (Dennis Prager is right about people’s love; peoples love can be earned. See the first 8 minutes of this. But God's love cannot.
