Sweden

Not everything in Sweden is rosy. Sweden is now being bombed almost every week.

Why is Sweden having so much trouble?

Sweden used to be a peaceful country. Swedes used to believe (or at least aspired to believe) that they should love their enemies and forgive those who sinned against them. What happened? Why is hate destroying Sweden?

Simply put, our beliefs influence our behaviour. People who believe they should love their enemies will behave very differently to those who believe they should hate their enemies. From a very early age, some people, in some cultures, are taught that they should hate their enemies. (There are many striking examples of how belief influences behaviour in Mark Durie’s book, The Third Choice.) Sweden’s problem with violence has come about because the Swedes have welcomed some people into their country who have hate-filled beliefs.

But not all is woe in Sweden. Sweden is much wealthier than it used to be. So how did Sweden go from being so poor 150 years ago, to becoming so wealthy today?
