Violence in the name of Islam is turning many Iranians away from Islam. This is not surprising. Seeing a friend who smokes die of cancer, is enough to make some smokers stop smoking. Which brings me to a curious point.
If I say, “Smoking causes cancer,” few if any people will object. They won’t say, “I know an old man who has been smoking all his life and he doesn’t have cancer.” They won’t say, “not everyone who smokes gets cancer.”
Why not? Because they know that when I say, “smoking causes cancer,” I’m simply saying that if you smoke you are far more likely to get cancer than someone who does not smoke.
Now if I say, “If you fill your head with hateful beliefs, you will become mentally unstable,” people won’t object to that. They’ll say that’s true. The brain is plastic, if you are taught to hate it will literally change the wiring in your brain.
You know some peaceful Muslims? I know some people who smoke but don’t have cancer.
